Doro Dines: Canffle

Pastries are my love language. Back when we worked in the office, I would get a donut from Cartems Donuts every week, without fail. Rain or shine, I would happily trot over to my favourite donuterie for a London Fog stuffie, Earl Grey donut, or whatever their weekly special was. After a particularly gruelling client call, you could usually find me drowning my frustrations at Thierry with a mid-day croissant and/or macaron (or three).

My Instagram algorithm is fully aware of my love for pastries and while casually scrolling through my Explore page one day, I froze in my tracks. I watched someone place an adorable mini croissant in a wafflemaker and witnessed the holy matrimony between a croissant and waffle. The birth of a croffle. I began to salivate… my tastebuds needed to try it.

When a friend told me that a neighbourhood joint serving croffles and breakfast opened up, I knew I had to go.

Canffle is a bright, compact cafe in Vancouver offering waffle-based plates with a range of unique, sweet, and savoury toppings. They can seat around 30 folks in their dining area so if you want to dine-in on a weekend, get there early. You order at the counter and they will bring your food to you once it’s ready. We dined for an hour and noticed multiple delivery folks come and go - if you can’t venture out to South Vancouver, the delivery apps may be able to get a croffle right to your doorstep!

Croffle club sandwich (poached chicken breast, peameal bacon, red onion, tomato, greens, egg, croffle) at Canffle

I ordered the croffle club sandwich and it was love at first sight. I mean, look at those perfect sunny side up eggs and bright yellow yolks! By poaching the chicken breast, you don’t have to worry about drying the meat out during the cooking process. The croffle was slightly sweet on the outside and perfectly buttery on the inside, but not excessively buttery like a Costco croissant. Canffle does not skimp on fillings! There was a hefty amount of food for $14.75 that delivered in terms of value and flavour; I would order it again.

As we all know, my eyes are bigger than my stomach so I ordered an additional croffle for dessert. I opted for the plain cream croffle while my friend ordered the strawberry cream croffle. The croffle itself was everything I imagined and more: slightly caramelized on the outside while remaining soft and buttery on the inside, with a slight chew. While I appreciated the sheer volume of cream on my croffle, I felt like half the amount would have been perfect as the cream overpowered the pastry. I may opt for a plain croffle next time or ask for the cream on the side.

Overall, I enjoyed my visit to Canffle and can’t wait to go back to try their savoury croffles. If this addiction gets out of hand, I may end up ordering a waffle maker… will keep you all posted.

What I ordered:

  • Croffle clubhouse sandwich ($14.75)

  • Plain cream croffle ($5.25)

With love,
Doro
